Services

Alta Dog specializes in helping dogs rehabilitate and build healthy lifestyles. Canine rehabilitation combines therapeutic exercise in and out of water, hands on techniques and the use of modalities such as laser, electrical stimulation and ultrasound to assist your dog in pain reduction, tissue healing, strengthening and improving overall functional mobility.

When your dog is recovering from an acute injury or living with a chronic condition we take into consideration not only the events leading up to the current injury, but the primary role your dog plays in your life. Whether they are a loved companion or have a specific job, we design our treatment plan with the ultimate goal of returning your friend to their prior level of function, or better, rather than just “fixing” the problem.

We know most healing happens at home so we teach you to continue your dog’s rehab process with a pain management and home exercise program. We treat each of our new friends as individuals and design a customized program to fit your circumstances and needs.

Underwater treadmill

Alta Dog Rehab has an Underwater Treadmill (UWTM) that may be used as part of your dogs treatment. The properties and buoyancy of water help to promote aerobic fitness and strengthen muscles with reduced joint impact. The buoyancy of water can be used to help support your dog making it easier to exercise with painful or weight bearing restricted conditions. The warm water helps to improve circulation as well as relieve muscle and joint pain.

Therapeutic Exercise ProgamS

Alta Dog Rehab offers Therapeutic Exercise Programs designed specifically for the needs of your dog. These individually designed therapeutic exercises help to increase range of motion, flexibility, strength, balance, proprioception, core stability and will help normalize mobility.

During your session at Alta Dog Rehab we may use exercise equipment including: peanut balls, donut balls, round balls, rocker/balance boards, cavaletti poles, resistance bands, and/or steps.

To facilitate carryover and continued improvement, we provide hands on training along with a written home exercise program that you will be able to implement in your own home. At Alta Dog, we emphasize this home exercise program as the key to success for returning your dog to normal activity.

Manual Therapy

Alta Dog Rehab utilizes manual therapy to decrease pain, increase range of motion, enhance tissue healing and improve your dogs mobility. These hands on techniques include: various types of massage, joint mobilization, stretching, range of motion, and soft tissue mobilization such as myofacial release and/or trigger point release.

Almost all dogs are candidates and benefit from some form of manual therapy.

Modalities

Alta Dog Rehab believes in the use of modalities as needed to assist in decreasing pain and swelling and facilitate muscle re-education. We have found modalities to be helpful in treating both acute and chronic conditions. Your dog will not feel any discomfort with the use of modalities.

Cold Laser Therapy– Alta Dog Rehab has a cold laser available. Cold laser also known as low level laser therapy (LLLT) assists tissue healing at the cellular level. We may utilize laser therapy as part of your dogs treatment to help with pain reduction, promote tissue and/or wound healing, increase circulation and decrease edema.

Electrical Stimulation – Alta Dog Rehab has a variety of electric waveforms available. We use small electrodes over your dogs skin in order to deliver the electric pulse that is most effective in treating your dogs injury. The most common waveform utilized for pain and swelling is Interferential Current (IFC). The most common waveform utilized for muscle re-education following a neurological or orthopedic injury is Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES).

Therapeutic Ultrasound – Alta Dog Rehab has therapeutic ultrasound available to help treat pain associated with chronic conditions. Therapeutic ultrasound transforms sound waves to thermal energy (deep heat) to muscles, tendons and/or ligaments which increases blood flow to a specific area.

Dry Needling

Alta Dog Rehab has been trained and certified in the procedure of dry needling; a safe, non-invasive therapeutic treatment used to decrease and/or eliminate muscle and myofacial pain, namely in trigger points or muscle spasms. The treatment uses small needles placed directly  into the trigger point to decrease tightness, increase blood flow, and decrease pain. We use a very gentle method causing very little to no discomfort to your dog.

Dry needling is different from acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on Meridian/Energy lines that run along the surface of the body and is used to relieve medical conditions related to organ function. Dry needling is rooted in western medicine and treats pain patterns and movement dysfunction of the muscles.

This treatment may be recommended as part of your pets rehabilitation plan, in combination with their physical therapy program to improve range of motion and function of the muscle, and overall relaxation.
